Professor Paul Nestel is a Consultant Cardiologist and a highly qualified and experienced expert of cardiovascular medicine, atherosclerosis, diabetes and nutrition. Professor Nestel has had several decades of medico-legal expertise in workplace litigation relevant to cardiovascular disease.
Further to completing medical and specialist physician training, Prof Nestel has had a long and distinguished career holding high-profile senior academic positions at universities in Australia and the USA, including two positions as Professor of Medicine. His professional roles included the post of Deputy Director at the Baker Medical Research Institute, Clinical Professor in Medicine at Flinders University of South Australia, the Chief, CSIRO Division of Human Nutrition and an Honorary Professor of Medicine at Deakin University in Victoria. During his tenure as Chief at the CSIRO, Prof Nestel chaired the Oversight Committee, National Food & Nutrition Policy for the Australian Government, was a member of a working group on food policy for the Prime Minister’s Science Council, a member of the NHMRC National Nutrition, Food and Health Committee, Chairman of the National Heart Foundation’s Diet & Heart Disease Committee, and Chair of the National Nutrition Committee, Australian Academy of Science.
Prof Nestel has served on numerous Advisory Committees and Boards, as well as national and international working parties on policies related to cardiovascular health. He has published 490 peer reviewed research and health policy papers in the areas of cardiovascular medicine, lipid metabolism, human nutrition, clinical pharmacology and clinical medicine. Prof Nestel has received many awards and distinctions, including as a recipient of the Order of Australia and the Centennial Medal for contributions in his field to Australia.
